Overview

Schematic of the sEQE setup.

Schematic of the custom-built sEQE setup used in this work. White light from a tungsten-halogen light source is directed into a monochromator and split by wavelength. The monochromatic light is subsequently modulated by a chopper wheel and focused onto the device under testing (i.e. a solar cell or reference photodiode). When measuring OSCs, the devices are either loaded into a standard sample holder for room temperature measurements or connected inside a cryostat to perform temperature-dependent sEQE measurements. The resulting photocurrent is pre-amplified and converted to a voltage, before being analyzed further by a Lock-In amplifier

The device is placed in a 3D printed sample box, contacted by a conducting spring system, and secured via a top cover (here red) and two side clips (here black). Connection to individual devices is achieved via crocodile clips. The sEQE setup’s sample holder is custom design by Grey and the 3D printed parts can be found in the AFMD small projects subrepository . These parts were designed in OpenSCAD and the code of the programms unique programming language resides in the .scad files. The holder was printed with PLA plastic fillament using an Ultimaker 2 printer. The printed circuit boards were designed using KiCAD software and manufactured by JLCPCB.

Cryostate

Organic solar cell characterization was initially conducted at room temperature utilizing the setup as described above. However, to gain deeper insights into temperature-dependent mechanisms affecting light conversion within the solar cells, we enhanced our experimental setup by integrating a cryostat for temperature-dependent sEQE measurements. The process involves loading the samples onto the temperature stage under standard conditions, establishing electrical connections via thin metal pins, and connecting the cryostat to the temperature controller, liquid nitrogen pump, and a liquid nitrogen-filled dewar. Prior to measurement, the temperature stage is flushed with nitrogen for 5-10 minutes to remove water and oxygen within the cryostat. Subsequently, the cryostat is affixed onto a custom-built holder and aligned within the EQE setup. To prevent condensation during measurement, a thin plastic tube delivering warm nitrogen air is directed onto the quartz window. Temperature settings and measurements are facilitated by our custom-built Python software and a propetary Windows program provided by the cryostat supplier. The cryostat’s temperature range spans from -196°C to +420°C, with most measurements on our organic solar cells conducted between -125°C and +80°C.
